The First Mercury–Neptune Conjunction in Aries: A New Cycle Begins
165 Years in the Making — How This Fiery Alignment Sparks New Visions, Bold Expression, and Spiritual Action
We have transiting Mercury conjoined with Neptune in Aries. This is the first time Mercury and Neptune have been together in the fire sign of Aries in 165 years. We've had Neptune in Pisces for approximately 14 years, and during that time, we've experienced Mercury–Neptune alignments in the water sign of Pisces—sensitive, imaginative, and mystical.
But now that Neptune has just moved into Aries, this is the first Mercury–Neptune conjunction in Aries, a fire sign.
Mercury represents our impulse to communicate, to be curious, to teach, to promote our ideas, and to share information. It rules our nervous system, reasoning, and conceptual abilities, as well as manual dexterity. It’s associated with transportation and short-term, everyday travel (not foreign travel). It also governs the spoken and written word.
Neptune, on the other hand, is the planet that represents divinity—reconnecting with our higher self. It’s about blissful unity, oneness. It dissolves ego. Neptune can also represent illusion and deception—false mirages. Its influence can run the gamut from disorientation and confusion to serenity and cosmic unity.
What’s different this time is that Mercury and Neptune are no longer traveling together in Pisces by transit. They are now having their first conjunction in Aries, which is ruled by Mars.
The Mars archetype is our urge to take action and go after what we want. It can be aggressive, fearless, and adventurous. Mars is our competitive drive, our passion, and our dynamic pursuit of goals and objectives. It also governs our urge to defend ourselves or fight for what matters to us.
So, this is a very interesting time to pay attention—all this week—to how this aspect is playing out in our own lives. It’s going to give us our first inkling of what Neptune in Aries is about, because Neptune will remain in Aries for many years to come.
That is my thought for the day—and the transit to contemplate this week. I’ll be back soon to talk about the upcoming Mars–Pluto opposition, which is just around the corner.
